The Issue

One of the three main school access points serving Meadow Park Elementary School and South Lake Middle School currently lacks crossing-guard coverage. Children regularly cross West Yale Loop at this location, relying on drivers to obey the stop sign without a crossing guard present to help them cross.

Families use the Misty Run cul-de-sac for student drop-offs and pedestrian access because pathways connect this area to both schools. The attached map shows this access point between the two campuses and its connection to West Yale Loop.

As parents and residents, we are concerned about children navigating this crossing while drivers are managing school drop-offs, turning movements, and through traffic. This frequently used route deserves attention and appropriate supervision.

Our Request
We ask the responsible city and school officials to:

Assign a trained crossing guard at West Yale Loop and Misty Run during arrival and dismissal periods, with coverage that accounts for both schools’ schedules.
Conduct an on-site assessment during actual school traffic hours, including observations of student crossings, vehicle movements, and drop-off activity.
Provide interim crossing supervision while the request is evaluated and permanent coverage is arranged.
Give families a written response identifying the responsible agency, the next steps, and a timeline for action.

Why This Matters
Children should not have to navigate a busy school crossing without appropriate adult assistance. Families need a dependable, supervised route to both campuses—not uncertainty about whether drivers will see and yield to students.

This petition seeks a focused safety improvement: crossing-guard coverage at an existing, regularly used school access point. It does not request street narrowing or reduced vehicle access.

We urge city and school officials to address this concern promptly. We should not wait for an injury or serious incident before evaluating and addressing a crossing that families already identify as a concern.
