Petition for Balanced Storytelling in Media

Subject: Ensuring Balance and Fairness in Media Reporting at ABC News Australia's Four Corners Report ‘Infiltrating Australia’ on Monday, June 17th, 2024

Australia and India enjoy a strong relationship characterized by deep economic ties, strategic cooperation, and cultural exchange. Major areas of collaboration include trade, with significant exports and investments in mining, energy, and education, and defense, notably through joint military exercises and participation in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad).

Over 1+ Million Indian Diaspora in Australia has made significant contributions across various facets of society, enriching the cultural, economic, and social fabric of the nation.  

Indian diaspora in Australia are second highest tax paying community and work shoulder to shoulder to uplift our Australian community. We have strengthens cultural links, while Australia is a popular destination for Indian students as well with over 100,000 International student calling Australia home.

Our leadership are also very close and both countries have high-level diplomatic visits and agreements, such as the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) and the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), underscore their commitment to regional stability, mutual prosperity, and addressing global challenges together.

We, the undersigned, believe that truthful , balanced and public interest storytelling in media is essential for a healthy, informed, and democratic society and we should make better use of tax payer money spend on media.

We call upon ABC News Australia, Australian Press Council, journalistic organizations, and regulatory bodies to uphold and promote truth ,balance and fairness in their reporting practices, especially in light of the recent Four Corners report ‘Infiltrating Australia ’ aired on Monday, June 17th, 2024.

The Importance of Balanced , Honest and Fair Media Reporting

Fostering Informed Public Opinion: Balanced media provides multiple perspectives on an issue, enabling the audience to form well-rounded and informed opinions. This is crucial for a functioning democracy, where citizens need access to comprehensive information to make informed decisions.

Ensuring Fairness and Credibility: A balanced approach ensures that all relevant viewpoints are considered and reported, upholding journalistic integrity and credibility. Audiences are more likely to trust media outlets that demonstrate a commitment to fairness and impartiality.

Avoiding Bias and Misinformation: Balanced reporting helps to mitigate bias and prevent the spread of misinformation. By presenting diverse perspectives, media can reduce the risk of perpetuating falsehoods and partial truths, which can have harmful effects on public discourse and decision-making.

Our Call to Action to ABC News Australia
We, over 1+ Million members of the Indian diaspora in Australia, are deeply hurt by the sentiments expressed in the Four Corners report ‘Infiltrating Australia’ which appears to be biased and lacking balanced information. We urge ABC News Australia to:

Commit to balanced reporting practices that include diverse perspectives.
Provide fair and impartial coverage of political, social, and economic issues.
Resist commercial and political pressures that could compromise balanced reporting.

Uphold journalistic ethics that emphasize accuracy, fairness, and impartiality.

Foster social cohesion by promoting dialogue and understanding among different groups.

I urge you all to sign the petition to demand balanced, fair, unbiased storytelling in media at ABC News Australia, in relation to the Four Corners report ‘Infiltrating Australia’ aired on June 17th, 2024!
