Change The Captain Cook Statue in Downtown Anchorage to Elizabeth Peratrovich

The Issue

Now is the time to remove the statue of Captain Cook from downtown Anchorage and replace it with a worthy historical figure who tirelessly worked civil rights, Elizabeth Peratrovich. It is sad that she is not widely known until recently for her endeavors of bringing civil rights to Native Alaskans. She advocated for an Anti-Discrimination bill that successfully passed in the territory of Alaska in 1945. Her poignant testimony is still valid today,

“I would not have expected that I, who am barely out of savagery, would have to remind gentlemen with five thousand years of recorded civilization behind them, of our Bill of Rights.”
