The Issue

Last year, my property tax on my mobile home in Canyon County increased by nearly $100 over the previous year. As someone on a limited income, relying solely on Social Security, I find myself in a dilemma. This year, I'm left with no choice but to dip into my already meager emergency fund to cover the additional cost. My story resonates with many residents in Canyon County who are struggling to keep up with rising property taxes, especially during a period of economic stagnation.

The ongoing increases in property taxes directly linked to the volatile real estate market put undue pressure on the budgets of countless homeowners, particularly those living on fixed or limited incomes. These continuous hikes are becoming unsustainable, as they do not correspond with the economic realities faced by so many of us. The Core Consumer Price Index (CPI), which reflects the average change in prices paid by consumers for goods and services, should be the yardstick by which property assessments are determined. We would also like to request a 3% maximum cap on property taxes.²

Currently, property's assessed values in Canyon County seem to rise disproportionately to any tangible increase in actual consumer goods and services cost. For many families and individuals, particularly seniors and those in low-income categories, these taxation outlays become insurmountable hurdles each year.

We urge the Idaho Lawmakers and the  County Tax Assessor to review the current assessment method. By aligning property assessments more closely with the Core CPI rather than the often unpredictable real estate market, there could be a more equitable and manageable approach. This change will not only allow residents to plan their finances with greater predictability but also provide a buffer for those hardest hit by economic downturns.

Changing the assessment criteria to match the Core CPI is a realistic and fair adjustment that serves the community's interest. It would uphold the county's obligation to ensure fair taxation practices while preserving the quality of life for all residents.

Please join us in advocating for this crucial change that reflects our economic conditions more accurately and protect the financial stability of residents. Sign this petition to demand a fairer assessment for Canyon County taxpayers.
