PETITION: Support Neurodivergent Australians & End Unbanking Practices

The issue

To: Great Southern Bank, the Australian Banking Association, and Australian Financial Regulators

💛 What “Unbanking” Really Means

Unbanking happens when someone suddenly loses access to their bank account — through an unexpected closure, restriction, or decision made without proper support, clear communication, or real consent.

For neurodivergent people, this often happens because our communication styles, support needs, and processing differences aren’t recognised or respected.

Losing banking access means being unable to:

💸 receive income

🏡 pay rent

🔌 manage bills

🛒 take care of daily essentials

Unbanking doesn’t just close an account — it shuts people out of financial safety and independence.

This is scary, isolating, and deeply unfair.

Why We’re Raising Awareness

Neurodivergent Australians deserve a banking system that:

🤝 understands us

💬 communicates clearly

🌈 respects our needs

🧠 supports our differences

But many people in our community experience unbanking quietly, without help, and without knowing their rights.

We are raising our voices because no one should face this alone.

Unbanking harms our community through:

⚠️ sudden loss of stability

⚠️ increased stress and confusion

⚠️ barriers to independence

⚠️ reduced economic opportunity

We deserve dignity, safety, and fair treatment — just like everyone else.

🌟 What We Are Asking For

1. 🤗 Clear, Respectful, Accessible Communication

Banks must use language that is easy to understand, offer written communication when needed, and allow advocates or supporters to be included.

2. 🔐 No Account Closures Without Real Consent

No closure should happen unless the customer is present, supported, aware, and able to make an informed decision.

3. 💙 A Commitment to Inclusion, Not Exclusion

Banks must avoid any process that leaves neurodivergent people financially shut out or unable to access their own accounts.

4. 📘 National Guidelines & Accountability

We call for consistent accessibility standards across Australia to ensure fairness, transparency, and protection for all neurodivergent customers.

🌼 Why This Matters to All of Us

Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and included when managing their finances.

Neurodivergent Australians contribute to our communities, our workplaces, and our shared future.

When banks fail to support us, they limit:

🌱 our opportunities

📈 our economic growth

💪 our independence

🤝 our participation in everyday life

This petition is about awareness, respect, and creating a future where neurodivergent people are supported — not unbanked.

📝 We, the undersigned, call for accessible, compassionate, and fair banking practices for neurodivergent Australians.

Together, we can build awareness, change systems, and ensure every person is treated with dignity.
