Stop Edmonton Transit Fare Hike

We the undersigned oppose the City of Edmonton’s plan to increase transit fare from $3.25 to $3.50 in 2019, $3.75 in 2020, and $4.00 in 2021. This amounts to a 25 per cent increase in just three years.

This transit fare hike is an attack against workers who rely on public transit to commute to and rom work and go about their daily activities.

  • With almost 15 percent of Edmontonians using public transit to get to work, the proposed increase will make public transportation less and less accesible for many workers.
  • This fare increase would mean reduced mobility and increased social isolation for low-income workers who cannot afford a car, which in turn can have a negative impact on mental health and reduce access to employment.
  • This fare increase would push more workers to be dependent on private cars, which will increase greenhouse gas emissions. Study after study have conclusively shown that public transportation is one of the most effective strategies to deal with climate change.

We call on youth, workers, trade unions, student unions and other community organizations to oppose this transit fare increase. We need to create a truly public transportation, one that is universally accessible to all and environmentally responsible.

No to transit fare hike!
For free public transport!
For massive investments in public transportation!
