Dear Neighbors,
It has come to our attention that some of our neighbors have been feeding stray cats in our community. While this act may arise from kindness and compassion, it's crucial to consider the potential consequences, particularly regarding public health and community safety.
We've noticed instances where the food left out for stray cats has attracted raccoons and possums, leading to hazardous encounters, including a recent incident where a child was attacked. Feeding stray cats unintentionally draws wildlife into our community, creating risks for both humans and animals alike.
Feeding stray cats can also result in several health issues for both the animals and humans in our neighborhood, including overpopulation, disease transmission, nuisance behaviors, and property damage.
To effectively address these concerns and ensure the well-being of our community, I urge everyone to refrain from feeding stray cats.
Instead, I'm pleased to share information about Richland County's Community Cat Diversion Program, operating under the proven Trap Neuter Return Method.
This method offers a humane and effective approach to reduce cat overpopulation in our area. Here's how it works:
1. Residents interested in trapping free-roaming or stray cats in their vicinity will receive spay/neuter vouchers. These vouchers can be used at Palmetto Lifeline or the Humane Society.
2. Community cats are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and ear-tipped for identification purposes. After recovery, they are returned to their outdoor habitats.
To participate in the Community Cat Diversion Program or to report stray cats in need of assistance, please contact the Ombudsman’s office at 803-929-6000.
Additionally, if you come across a stray cat in need, please consider reaching out to appropriate authorities who can provide the necessary care and support.
Let's work together to find humane solutions that benefit both our neighborhood and the welfare of stray animals. Thank you for your attention to this matter, and let's continue to foster a safe and harmonious environment for all residents.
