The Issue

I’m a proud resident of Northclift Drive in Raleigh, and I cherish living in a community free from a Homeowners Association, where individual homeowner rights and community safety are of utmost importance. However, recent decisions by the city of Raleigh to impose no parking zones along our street are taking away those rights and contributing to a broader community problem.

The essence of our neighborhood lies in its accessibility and safety, but the current no parking regulations are causing increased traffic congestion, limiting homeowners' ability to park in front of their own houses, and transforming our community’s landscape in a way that feels both restrictive and counterproductive. Given our neighborhood’s age, housing layout, and impervious surface limitations, every resident should have the fundamental right to park in proximity to their home without facing fines or extended inconveniences.

Moreover, speed humps have proven across numerous studies to greatly enhance pedestrian safety, improve traffic flow, reduce vehicle speed, and subsequently minimize accident rates at intersections. Implementing speed humps instead of enforcing no parking zones provides a tried-and-tested solution that aligns with the needs and safety concerns of our community.

A study by the Institute of Transportation Engineers highlighted that speed humps in residential settings reduce average vehicle speeds by 10-15% and increase compliance with speed limits by approximately 20%. These measures can not only reduce speed-related hazards but also deter through-traffic, encouraging drivers to instead travel on more suitable main roads, thus relieving congestion on residential streets like Northclift Drive.

The implementation of speed humps will allow Northclift to maintain its community spirit, preserve homeowners' rights, and enhance road safety for all users. It's a proactive approach that addresses safety while respecting the personal interests and rights of its residents — a solution that truly benefits everyone.

Join me in urging the Raleigh Town Hall to reconsider their decision and embrace a more effective, community-friendly approach. Sign this petition to replace the no parking zones with the installation of speed humps on Northclift Drive, a solution that serves the best interests of our community's safety and accessibility."
