Grant Public Beach Access Sea Island

The Issue

You do not need to be a resident of Georgia to sign the petition.  Your signature supports increasing equitable access to outdoor spaces and places

Vertical and perpendicular public access for Sea Island Beach in Georgia was removed by the Glynn County Commissioners and Sea Island Corporation about 20 years ago.  Vertical and perpendicular access means access across the upload dry sand portion of the beach perpendicular to the ocean.  In other words, a person can access the beach by land.  Access was eliminated due to a land acquisition of Sea Island Road by Sea Island Corporation for a minimal price with the approval of Glynn County Commissioners. The land acquisition was done without the support of Glynn County Citizens.

By O.C.G.A. 52-1-2, all the beaches in the state of Georgia belong to the citizens of Georgia and are open to the public to the ordinary high-water mark.

Sea Island Corporation gated off public access to Sea Island. The land acquisition removed vertical and perpendicular access to Sea Island beach.  Glynn County Commissioners did not have the right to allow vertical and perpendicular access to Sea Island beach to be removed.

Since Sea Island beach access was denied, the population and tourism within Glynn County has grown.  Redevelopment of vertical beach access by eminent domain would be beneficial to the increased population of Glynn County and to Georgia tourism.

Please sign and share this petition to reclaim our shoreline’s vertical and perpendicular access points for Sea Island Beach.  In addition, please reach out by phone to leave a message to  Georgia State Representatives in Congress to ask for vertical and perpendicular beach access points to be redeveloped for Sea Island. A phone call is more powerful than an email.

Please note:

I made this petition under the category of economic justice.  Soft economic infrastructure such as vertical beach access allows people to thrive and participate in  a daily life.

Change.org will prompt you to donate.  The donation will go to change.org to fund their website and to promote petitions.  However, I am not asking for or taking donations.

Thank you.
