New District "Survey": Make Your Voice Heard

Barrington United for Education, Community Members Dedicated to Promoting and Sustaining Quality in District 220 Schools
18 mai 2016
At 10 pm last night, immediately at the end of the Board meeting, you may have received the Board's newsletter briefly summarizing the late start discussions and request for public comment or suggestions be sent to the Board by clicking the link "here." That link brings you to what looks like another start time survey for all grade levels (apparently applies to 2017/2018) Like the last survey, there are no details here as to impacts on face-to-face instruction, less instruction time academic options, extracurricular activities, family time, etc. Additionally, the form does not permit a choice of earlier than 8:00 a.m. as start times across the grades. Unlike the last survey, it appears you can submit the form more than once--assuming you are making a different option and/or comment in the "comment" bar.
If it looks like a survey, it's results will most likely be used as "survey" results. As such, please take the time to complete this new form and let others know to fill out the survey and/or sign this petition.
At the very least, consider sending the Board a comment about 1) requesting a full and unbiased survey to all stakeholders before decisions are made that effect the entire community, and/or 2) a comment objecting to selecting start times on the linked survey without the known or potential cost in instruction and budget for each possible start time being correspondingly noted.
Additionally, if you are not aware, parents of Freshman and Sophomores can currently petition for an open first and/or second period. An Input220 spokesperson mentioned Freshman and Sophomore parents were not aware of that possibility. However, Juniors and Seniors do know they have the right to opt out of first and/second period. (Third period starts at about 9:11 a.m.). According to the District, less than 10% of Juniors and Seniors currently choose to take an open first and/or second period off. There may be a push for Freshman and Sophomores next year or the year after to take an open period first or second period, which by default might result in a 9:00 am or later start time the year(s) after. Give careful consideration to that as a possibile result when determining your student's class schedule.
