Petition: Keep the MIT Children’s Education Centre Open

The issue

To: MIT Leadership, Executive Team, and Centre Management

Date: December 2025

We, the parents, caregivers, whānau, and community members of the MIT Children’s Education Centre (CEC), strongly oppose the proposed closure of the Centre at the end of this year.

For more than 30 years, the CEC has been a vital and safe place for our tamariki, supporting generations of families within the Manukau community. Its closure will create significant hardship for working parents, student parents, and staff, and will deeply affect our children’s stability, wellbeing, and sense of belonging.

Our Concerns

We are deeply worried about the closure and the lack of transparency around the decision-making process. Specifically:

1. Insufficient information provided to parents

2. No genuine consultation with parents prior to the announcement

3. Impact on our tamariki

4. Impact on student parents and working families

What We Are Asking For

We respectfully request that MIT:

1. Pause the closure decision

Do not proceed with closing the Centre until a full and transparent review has taken place.

2. Provide transparent documentation including:

  • a financial breakdown from the past 3–5 years
  • enrolment numbers and trends
  • evidence of marketing or initiatives to increase enrolments
  • options MIT explored before choosing closure
  • any audits, external reviews, or advice informing the decision

3. Work in partnership with parents and staff

We ask MIT to engage in meaningful consultation, allowing parents to propose solutions or alternatives.

4. Explore all realistic options such as:

  • improved marketing and visibility
  • partnerships with local organisations
  • applying for funding streams
  • restructuring or adjusting fees
  • reviewing internal operating decisions that may have contributed to declining enrolment

Our Position

The MIT Children’s Education Centre is more than a service, it is a community.

Our children deserve stability, care, and continuity.

We believe this Centre can remain viable with the right support, transparent information, and genuine collaboration.

We urge MIT Leadership to reconsider this closure and work with us to keep the Centre open for our tamariki, for current families, and for future generations.
