Petition in demanding NYC department of education recognize Lunar New Year

Petition in demanding NYC department of education recognize Lunar New Year
The Issue
Lunar New Year is legal school holiday in New York City. However, for the 2022-2023 school year, the NYC Department of Education (DOE) administration chose to remove Lunar New Year completely from the school year calendar.
I demand that the city administration re-evaluates their decision and recognize Lunar New Year as equally important as other cultural holidays and update the 2022-2023 school year calendar accordingly before the school year starts. I am requesting that the NYC DOE respect and observe Lunar New Year on January 23, 2023. This will allow the students, teachers, and staff members of all Asian/ Pacific Islander heritage to keep their tradition by celebrating and observe an important cultural day with their families on Monday, January 23.
