Petition: Improve Roblox’s Safety System to Better Protect Children
The Issue
Petition: Improve Roblox’s Safety System by Prioritizing Effective Parental Controls
Roblox is enjoyed by millions of children worldwide, and while the platform has introduced new safety features, some of these systems are unreliable, easily bypassed, or unintentionally make kids more vulnerable. We are calling on Roblox Corporation to shift its focus toward strong, flexible, parent-driven controls rather than systems that look protective but don’t actually work in practice.
1. Replace or Redesign the AI Age Estimation System
The current age-scanning AI:
Is easy to bypass
Often provides inaccurate age results
Can misplace players into unsafe or inappropriate categories
Because this system does not reliably separate adults from minors, Roblox should invest less into systems like this and more into practical parental control tools that actually protect children.
2. Rethink the Age Group Segmentation System
The strict age-group separation can unintentionally increase risks:
If a predator enters a younger age group, older players cannot see or intervene, removing a potential layer of community safety.
Young players become isolated, creating easier targets.
Roblox should instead design a system that balances safety with visibility, allowing harmful behavior to be more easily detected and reported.
3. Make Parental Control the Primary Safety Focus
Roblox should focus more on building strong parental controls instead of relying heavily on automated systems that can be fooled. Parents know their children best, and they should be given tools that allow them to directly manage their child’s experience.
A modern parental control system could include:
A. Chat Filters
Off: Only standard Roblox moderation applies
Mild: Profanity and references to outside apps are filtered
On: The player can only chat with approved contacts
B. Voice Chat Filters
Off: Only standard moderation applies
On: The player can only talk with approved contacts
C. Friend/Connection Requests
On: Anyone can send a friend request
Off: No one can send friend requests
Search-Only: Only people who type the exact username can send a request
D. Game Access Controls
Parents can:
Set an age limit (e.g., 6+, 9+)
Block specific games they find inappropriate
Or whitelist only games they personally approve
Why Parental Controls Should Be the Priority
Parental controls:
Are harder to bypass
Can be tailored to each child’s maturity level
Put safety decisions in the hands of the people who know the child best
Offer real, practical protection instead of superficial barriers
Roblox should dedicate more development resources to empowering parents with strong, customizable tools rather than systems that are unreliable or easy to exploit.
