The Issue

How many more lives must be lost before Northern Avenue becomes safe? For too long, residents in Pueblo have watched this roadway become a place of deadly crashes, reckless speeding, and weekend drag racing — all within feet of family homes and neighborhoods. Northern Avenue has become one of the most dangerous roads in our community, where unsafe driving and poor roadway conditions continue to put lives at risk. We respectfully call on the Colorado Department of Transportation and the City of Pueblo to work together to implement immediate safety improvements on Northern Avenue.

Why This Petition Matters

Residents report:

• Frequent deaths and serious crashes
• Ongoing drag racing and extreme speeding, especially on nights and weekends
• Drivers traveling at dangerous speeds near homes and neighborhoods
• Unsafe intersections with poor visibility and confusing traffic patterns
• Lack of lighting, crosswalks, and traffic calming measures

What makes this especially alarming is that Northern Avenue runs directly alongside residential neighborhoods, where families live, children play, and residents walk or bike.

Despite this proximity to homes and community spaces, drivers are regularly able to race, speed, and drive recklessly without sufficient deterrence or enforcement.

Our community deserves roads that protect families — not endanger them.

What We Are Asking

We call on the Colorado Department of Transportationand the City of Pueblo to work together to implement immediate safety improvements on Northern Avenue, including:

• A comprehensive safety review of the roadway and intersections
• Traffic calming measures to reduce speeding and reckless driving
• Improved lighting, signage, and crosswalks
• Increased enforcement to stop speeding and drag racing
• Intersection improvements at high-risk areas such as Northern Avenue and Vassar Avenue

Our Call to Action

We sign this petition in memory of Ted Portillos and all victims of crashes on Northern Avenue.

No family should have to experience the heartbreak of losing a loved one because a road was left unsafe.

We urge city and state leaders to act now — before another life is lost.

Our community cannot wait.

Thank you for reaching out. I also want to clarify an important detail: Northern Avenue is not in my district. That area falls within Councilmembers Roger Gomez (District 4) and Ted Hernandez (District 3) districts. That said, I’m supportive of every district’s efforts to improve safety and security across the city. My district—the Eastside—faces similar challenges, and I understand the concerns you’re raising. I'm working on safety in several areas of my district as a priority. I also believe we need more police on the streets at night. I’m out in my district regularly, and I see firsthand the issues residents are dealing with. I appreciate you speaking up, and I’m with you in pushing for safer neighborhoods citywide. God bless.
