PETITION FOR TRAFFIC SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS
PETITION FOR TRAFFIC SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS
The Issue
4-WAY STOP REQUEST: Oregon St & Broadway Ave
We, the undersigned residents and community members, formally request the installation of a 4-way stop at the intersection of Oregon Street and Broadway Avenue.
This request is based on ongoing and well-documented safety concerns that pose a significant risk to drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and nearby residents.
Documented Community Concerns
- Frequent speeding and drag racing
- Occurs regularly, especially around school dismissal hours
- Vehicles observed racing side-by-side, including into oncoming traffic lanes
- Dangerous visibility conditions
- Parked cars obstruct sightlines, making safe crossing difficult
- High speeds reduce reaction time and increase crash risk
- Credible risk of serious injury or fatality
- Residents report repeated near-misses
- Ongoing concern that action will only occur after a preventable tragedy
- Impact beyond the immediate intersection
- Dangerous driving behavior extends along Broadway between
- Urbana High School and
- Lincoln Square Mall
- Racing activity is audible and disruptive even to residents living nearby
Community Efforts Already Made
Residents have already attempted to address this issue through:
- Contacting local police
- Emailing Public Works
- Reaching out to City Council
- Participating in public discussion and organizing neighbors
- Despite these efforts, no meaningful safety improvements have been implemented.
Our Request
We respectfully urge the City to take immediate action by:
- Installing a 4-way stop at Oregon St & Broadway Ave
- Conducting a traffic study if required, without delay
- Implementing interim safety measures, including:
- Increased traffic enforcement
- Speed monitoring or mobile display units
- Temporary traffic calming measures
Statement of Urgency
We believe the current conditions represent a foreseeable and preventable safety hazard. Proactive intervention is necessary to protect the community and avoid serious injury or loss of life.
