4-WAY STOP REQUEST: Oregon St & Broadway Ave

 

We, the undersigned residents and community members, formally request the installation of a 4-way stop at the intersection of Oregon Street and Broadway Avenue.

This request is based on ongoing and well-documented safety concerns that pose a significant risk to drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and nearby residents.

 

Documented Community Concerns

• Frequent speeding and drag racing 
• Occurs regularly, especially around school dismissal hours
• Vehicles observed racing side-by-side, including into oncoming traffic lanes
• Dangerous visibility conditions
• Parked cars obstruct sightlines, making safe crossing difficult
• High speeds reduce reaction time and increase crash risk
• Credible risk of serious injury or fatality
• Residents report repeated near-misses
• Ongoing concern that action will only occur after a preventable tragedy
• Impact beyond the immediate intersection
• Dangerous driving behavior extends along Broadway between
• Urbana High School and
• Lincoln Square Mall
• Racing activity is audible and disruptive even to residents living nearby 
   

Community Efforts Already Made

Residents have already attempted to address this issue through:

• Contacting local police
• Emailing Public Works
• Reaching out to City Council
• Participating in public discussion and organizing neighbors
• Despite these efforts, no meaningful safety improvements have been implemented.

 

Our Request

We respectfully urge the City to take immediate action by:

• Installing a 4-way stop at Oregon St & Broadway Ave
• Conducting a traffic study if required, without delay
• Implementing interim safety measures, including:
• Increased traffic enforcement
• Speed monitoring or mobile display units
• Temporary traffic calming measures 
   

Statement of Urgency

We believe the current conditions represent a foreseeable and preventable safety hazard. Proactive intervention is necessary to protect the community and avoid serious injury or loss of life.
