The Issue
To: San Francisco 49ers Ownership, Executive Leadership, and Communications Department
We, the undersigned San Francisco 49ers fans and supporters, respectfully request that the organization conduct a formal review of Grant Cohn’s conduct as a credentialed member of the media and consider revoking his media access privileges.
We recognize and fully support the importance of independent journalism, freedom of the press, and the right of reporters to critically examine the performance and decisions of professional sports organizations.
However, there is a meaningful distinction between legitimate criticism and conduct that appears unnecessarily personal, antagonistic, or unprofessional.
Over the years, Cohn’s interactions with 49ers players, coaches, and fellow journalists have raised concerns among fans regarding the professionalism and accountability expected of individuals granted privileged access to the organization.
His recent public remarks directed toward fellow journalist David Lombardi have further intensified these concerns.
Our concerns include:
● A pattern of confrontational interactions involving players, coaches, and other members of the media.
● Public commentary that, in our opinion, sometimes prioritizes personal conflict over meaningful football analysis.
● Questions regarding the professionalism and respect demonstrated toward individuals within the organization and the broader media community.
● The potential impact of this approach on the working environment surrounding the team.
We are not requesting that Grant Cohn be silenced or prevented from expressing his opinions. He remains entitled to criticize the organization and publish his views.
We are asking the San Francisco 49ers to determine whether his conduct continues to meet the professional standards required for privileged media access.
We respectfully request that the organization review documented incidents, evaluate his conduct against its established credentialing policies, and consider suspension or revocation of his credentials if warranted.
Media access is a professional responsibility, and the standards governing that access should be applied fairly and consistently.
We encourage fellow 49ers fans who share these concerns to sign this petition and respectfully request accountability from the organization.
