Petition for the Safety of Adventure Sports Participants in India

Petition for the Safety of Adventure Sports Participants in India

The Issue

We, the undersigned, are deeply saddened by the recent paragliding accident in Manali on December 24, in which Suraj Shah, a 30 year old from Maharashtra, lost his life.  This is just one example of the many accidents that occur every year in India while performing adventure sports - and the numbers are really alarming.

Adventure sports, such as paragliding, can be an exhilarating and rewarding experience for those who participate in them. However, these activities also come with inherent risks, and it is crucial that proper safety measures are in place to protect participants.

We, therefore, demand that the government of India take immediate action to ensure the safety of all adventure sports participants in the country. Specifically, we call for the following measures to be implemented:

  1. Strict regulations and guidelines for adventure sports operators, to ensure that they adhere to the highest safety standards.
  2. Regular inspections of adventure sports equipment and facilities to ensure that they are in good working condition and are suitable for use.
  3. The mandatory use of safety equipment, such as helmets, harnesses and individual parachutes, by all participants in adventure sports.
  4. The provision of proper training and education to adventure sports participants, so that they are aware of the risks and know how to safely engage in these activities.
    1. There should be a mandatory safety training for all adventure sport participants, including regular refresher course.
    2. Participants should also be told what they can do in case an emergency arises before, during or after the activity.
    3. Information about nearest police station and hospitals should also be made available to participants beforehand.
  5. The formulation of emergency response plans to deal with accidents and mishaps, so that adequate medical aid can be provided in a timely manner.
  6. The introduction of strict penalties for operators who violate safety regulations, including the revocation of their licenses.

We believe that these measures will help to greatly reduce the risk of accidents and save lives. We urge the government to take swift and decisive action to implement them.
