RE: PETITION FOR THE REMOVAL OF UNAUTHORISED COMMERCIAL MOTORCYCLE (OKADA) OPERATORS FROM ICHIE MIKE EJEZIE STREET, LEKKI PHASE 1

We write on behalf of the Ichie Mike Ejezie Street Residents' Association to draw your urgent attention to the increasing and unlawful occupation of our residential street by commercial motorcycle (Okada) operators.

Over the past several weeks, there has been a significant influx of commercial motorcycle riders who neither reside on our street nor have any legitimate connection with the neighbourhood. These individuals have established an informal gathering point on the street and remain there for extended periods throughout the day. We are informed that many of them have become associated with members of the private security personnel engaged on the street, thereby emboldening their continued presence.

Our street is a strictly residential neighbourhood and was never intended to serve as a commercial motorcycle park or operational base. The continued presence of these riders has created a number of serious concerns, including:

1.     The unlawful occupation of the public highway and obstruction of free movement;

2.     Increased security risks arising from the congregation of unidentified persons within the neighborhood;

3.     Noise, disorderly conduct and nuisance to residents;

4.     The potential facilitation of criminal activity through the unrestricted movement of persons unknown to residents; and

5.     A deterioration in the peaceful residential character of our community.

The Residents' Association has resolved that this situation can no longer be permitted to continue. While we remain committed to maintaining cordial relations with all members of the public, the safety and security of residents must remain paramount.

Accordingly, we respectfully request that the Lagos State Task Force undertake an enforcement operation to remove all unauthorised commercial motorcycle operators from Ichie Mike Ejezie Street and prevent the establishment of any informal motorcycle park or gathering point on the street.

We also request that appropriate warnings be issued against any future occupation of the street by commercial motorcycle operators and that your office provides such further assistance as may be necessary to ensure continued compliance.

Photographs showing the current state of the street and the activities complained of are attached for ease of reference.

We trust that this matter will receive your urgent attention and would be grateful if enforcement action could be taken at the earliest opportunity in the interest of public safety and the security of our residents.
