Support the Reintroduction of Regional Passenger Rail to Tailem Bend & Murray Bridge

The issue

Dear Ministers and Infrastructure Leaders,

We, the undersigned, urge the South Australian and Australian Governments to prioritize the reintroduction of regional passenger rail services connecting Adelaide to Tailem Bend, including key stops at Monarto Zoo and Tailem Bend Motorsport Park, with potential extension to Murray Bridge.

This rail service will provide an accessible, sustainable, and efficient transportation alternative that strengthens regional connectivity and supports economic growth in South Australia.

Why This Matters
🚉 Regional Connectivity: Tailem Bend, Monarto Zoo, and Murray Bridge are important regional hubs with growing populations and tourism opportunities. Restoring passenger rail services will better connect these communities to Adelaide and beyond.

🌍 Sustainability: Rail is a cleaner, more energy-efficient mode of transport compared to car travel. It reduces greenhouse gas emissions and traffic congestion, helping South Australia meet its environmental goals.

🏭 Economic Growth: Reliable rail transport supports local businesses, tourism, and industries, attracting investment and creating jobs in the region.

🚗 Road Safety: The Adelaide–Murray Bridge corridor has significant traffic volumes with associated safety risks. Rail travel can reduce road congestion and improve safety outcomes.

👵 Mobility & Inclusion: Passenger rail services enhance access for seniors, students, and people without cars, fostering social inclusion and equal opportunity in regional areas.

🚄 Modern Rail Services: Using modern, fuel-efficient railcars (e.g., VLocity or similar) will ensure fast, comfortable, and reliable connections that encourage frequent use and long-term sustainability.

Call to Action
We call on all decision makers to collaborate and commit funding and strategic planning to restore passenger rail services to Tailem Bend and Murray Bridge as a priority infrastructure project for South Australia’s future.
