Petition for the Peaceful Secession of the West Coast States from the United States
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents and supporters of California, Oregon, and Washington, call upon our state governments to explore the possibility of peacefully and democratically seceding from the United States of America.
Reasons for Secession:
1. Protection of Civil Rights: Increasing threats and rhetoric from the federal government pose significant risks to the rights and freedoms of West Coast citizens.
2. Economic Harms from Federal Tariffs: Federal trade policies, including tariffs, disproportionately harm the economies of West Coast states, which rely heavily on international trade through our ports. Key ports such as Los Angeles, Long Beach, Seattle, and Portland serve as vital gateways for global commerce. These punitive tariffs disrupt supply chains, raise costs for local businesses, and undermine the economic stability of our states.
3. Political Disparities: Fundamental differences in values, governance priorities, and policy goals between the West Coast states and the federal government make continued union increasingly untenable.
4. Environmental Leadership: The West Coast has demonstrated a commitment to addressing climate change and sustainable development, which are undermined by federal policies.
5. Safety and Security: Escalating threats from federal leaders jeopardize the safety and well-being of our citizens.
Objectives of the Petition:
1. Referendum: We call for a state-organized referendum to determine public support for peaceful secession.
2. Negotiation: Engage with the federal government to discuss a peaceful, cooperative separation in accordance with democratic principles.
3. Independent Governance: Begin forming frameworks for an independent political entity representing the shared values of the West Coast states.
Economic Sustainability:
As independent states or a regional coalition, we can better negotiate trade agreements that align with our economic priorities and ensure the prosperity of our port-driven economies. Free from harmful federal trade policies, we can enhance our role as global economic hubs and secure a more stable financial future for our residents.
Commitment to Peace:
This petition advocates for a peaceful and lawful process that prioritizes diplomacy, respect for constitutional principles, and the consent of the governed. Secession should only proceed with the overwhelming support of the people and through legal mechanisms.
