The Issue

On behalf of concerned residents of Bass Lake, in Oro-Medonte, we formally petition for the implementation of a comprehensive septic system inspection programme. This initiative is vital to the preservation of the water quality and overall health of Bass Lake, particularly in preventing the increasing incidents of blue-green algae, which pose significant environmental, ecological, and public health risks.

Over the past few years, residents and visitors to Bass Lake have witnessed a troubling rise in the prevalence of blue-green algae blooms, which are not only unsightly but also harmful to aquatic life and dangerous to human health. Blue-green algae can produce toxins that cause skin rashes, gastrointestinal issues, and neurological symptoms, posing serious risks to swimmers, pets, and local wildlife. Furthermore, the presence of algae blooms significantly impacts tourism, recreation, and property values in the area.

It has been well-documented that the failure of septic systems in rural and lakefront communities can contribute to nutrient pollution, which fuels the growth of harmful algae. Improperly maintained or outdated septic systems often release excess phosphorus and nitrogen into surrounding bodies of water, which directly encourages the proliferation of algae blooms. Given the proximity of many septic systems to the shores of Bass Lake, it is crucial that a proactive approach is taken to address this issue before it escalates further.

A septic system inspection programme would help ensure that systems are functioning properly and not contributing to the nutrient pollution of Bass Lake. Regular inspections could identify failing systems that need repair or replacement and encourage property owners to invest in environmentally friendly solutions. This initiative would not only improve the water quality of Bass Lake but also contribute to long-term environmental sustainability in the region.

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the Municipality of Oro-Medonte prioritize the creation and immediate implementation of a septic system inspection programme on Bass Lake. The township already has a Septic Maintenance Program that continues to be successful for shoreline holders on Lake Simcoe. It would seem to make a great deal of sense to simply extend the same program to Bass Lake.  We believe that this proactive measure will help protect the lake’s ecosystem, safeguard the health of the community, and preserve the beauty of the area for future generations.

Thank you for your attention to this pressing matter. We look forward to the Municpality's support and the positive steps that will be taken to protect Bass Lake from the damaging effects of blue-green algae.

Regards,

Concerned Residents of Bass Lake
