Petition for strict prohibition of cooperation with ICE and public investments disclosure.

The Issue

As the attack against our immigrant communities reaches a treacherous peak, the city council of Lowell has an opportunity to be a beacon of light by taking a firm stance to protect all of the people who call this city home. Similar calls have been rejected due to already existing weak agreements that apply little limits to Lowell Police Department's cooperation with ICE and because city officials fear drawing ire from the federal government. We wholeheartedly reject these excuses and call on our city council to do more by:

  1. Publicly supporting the speedy passage of the Safe Communities Act. (What is the SCA? https://miracoalition.org/news/safe-communities-act/)
  2. Passing a local ordinance which limits public service/institution (i.e., schools, police force,...etc.) cooperation with ICE to the maximal extent (i.e., prohibiting ICE from staging operations on city property and directing LPD to verify warrants, identify agents, and investigate scenes).
  3. Publicly disclosing all city investments, including those related to the military-industrial-complex (companies which produce arms, closely work with the DoD, or are dependent on DoD or DoD-adjacent loans/grants)
