The Issue

Who can sign: Socorro City residents within the voting areas where Mayor Bhasker and the City Councilors appear/or could appear  as candidates.

We, the undersigned, demand that Mayor Bhasker and the current Socorro City Council immediately propose language to pause all exploitative development on projects that threaten our community’s water, land, infrastructure, and long‑term wellbeing.

Too many projects recently have been considered without transparent public process, meaningful community input, or a full accounting of environmental, social, and economic impacts. This is unacceptable! Our elected officials have a duty to protect residents first, not attempt to fast track projects that benefit private interests at the expense of public resources.

The community has already faced two deeply harmful proposals this year: Green Data’s high impact industrial data center and H. Bornhorst’s drone/weapons zoning request.

Green Data attempted to push forward a massive, resource intensive facility with no transparent environmental review, no water use disclosure, and no meaningful public engagement. Residents raised serious concerns about air emissions, groundwater depletion, and long‑term industrial encroachment on community land.

And just recently, Heinrick Bornhorst sought zoning changes to allow weapons testing drone operations inside city limits, a move that would have introduced noise pollution, safety risks, and militarized industrial activity directly adjacent to neighborhoods.

These projects demonstrate a pattern of outside interests attempting to reshape our community for profit while ignoring environmental, safety, and quality of life consequences. We refuse to allow harmful development to move forward without full transparency, rigorous review, and genuine community consent!!

We call on Mayor Bhasker and the City Council to:

  • Commit to a pause on all exploitative projects currently under consideration or negotiation.
  • Conduct full, independent impact assessments and make all findings publicly available.
  • Hold accessible, advance noticed public hearings that genuinely incorporate community feedback.
  • Adopt clear safeguards and enforceable conditions before any project is allowed to proceed.

Until these basic standards of accountability, transparency, and community protection are met, no further approvals, agreements, or commitments should be made.
