Petition for Safe Sidewalks in Metro Atlanta: Atlanta is a dangerous place to walk.
The Issue
Atlanta is a dangerous place to walk.
Every year, dozens of people are killed or injured in traffic accidents while walking in Atlanta. Most of these victims are children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
The lack of safe sidewalks is a major contributor to these accidents. In many parts of Atlanta, there are no sidewalks at all, or the sidewalks that do exist are in poor condition. This forces people to walk in the street, where they are at risk of being hit by a car.
The lack of safe sidewalks also contributes to traffic congestion and air pollution. When people are forced to walk in the street, it slows down traffic and increases emissions.
We elect government officials that promise to help us, but we are still being ignored.
We have elected government officials who have promised to make our streets safer for everyone. They have promised to invest in the construction and maintenance of safe sidewalks. But these promises have not been kept.
Women pushing strollers shouldn't have to walk in the street or try to walk on the grass. People in wheelchairs shouldn't have to risk their lives. Hard-working people, no matter where they live, should have access to safe, maintained walking spaces. Children, no matter where they live, should have access to safe, maintained walking spaces.
Sidewalks are a very basic and economically smart addition to cities. They make our streets safer for everyone, they reduce traffic congestion, and they improve air quality. We urge our elected officials to take action to make safe sidewalks a reality in Atlanta.
