Petition for Review of Proposed Redwood Tree Removal

Petition for Review of Proposed Redwood Tree Removal
The Issue
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the City of Palo Alto ensure that the proposed removal of protected coast redwood trees at Saint Thomas Aquinas Church (751 Waverley St) is only undertaken as a last resort.
We are not opposed to removal if it is clearly necessary for safety. However, we ask that the City confirm that all reasonable alternatives have been fully evaluated, including:
• Non-destructive root investigation (e.g., air excavation)
• Root management (pruning, barriers)
• Soil remediation
• Structural or design adaptations
• Ongoing monitoring and risk assessment
These mature trees provide significant environmental and community benefits, including shade and cooling, support for birdlife and urban biodiversity, stormwater management, and contribution to neighborhood character. Trees of this size and age cannot be quickly replaced.
