It's a new dawn in Logansport with the exit of Mayor Chris Martin, who quit with nearly half his four-year term remaining Monday.
At his final Logansport Board of Public Works and Safety meeting Wednesday afternoon, there were some ominous signs. One was that the agenda for the meeting, unlike most other city meeting agendas, made no allowance for public comments. Martin's administration has become known for shutting down the city's Facebook page after he received so many negative comments about him. He also issued guidelines for making public comments at meetings.
Former Logansport fire captain Scott Jones attended the meeting. As previously reported, Jones won a judgment for $300,000 from the city for Martin's handling of his personnel case. That case is being appealed by the city.
Deputy Mayor Jacob Pomasl acknowledged Martin's last meeting, but no one in the audience applauded or cheered his time in office.
Meanwhile, the board reversed a decision to fine one property owner for what appeared at first to be the second property violation in a month.
Pomasl is expected to be chosen by the city's Republican precinct committeemen to succeed Martin. If that happens, it will be the first time Logansport has two non-elected officials in the top two elected positions in city government. Earlier, Mike Stadjuhar was appointed to serve out the term of the former clerk-treasurer, another Republican.
