I recently learned that my first-grade son is watching TV in his classroom during recess. Another parent reported their child was told “showtime is quiet time” during tv recess. This practice of substituting outdoor recess with screen time is deeply concerning.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasizes the critical role of recess in promoting physical activity, social skills, stress reduction, and overall health. www.cdc.gov/recess

However, at PS 174 our kindergarten and first grade students are missing out on these benefits. Active play is being replaced by structured sedentary pastimes.

We urge school administrators to address this issue by implementing a daily outdoor recess program. Let’s ensure our children receive a balanced education that supports their healthy development.
