Petition for pothole free Mumbai

Petition for pothole free Mumbai
The Issue
India, with just 1% of the world's vehicles, accounts for more than 11% of fatal traffic accidents, marking it with the highest number of deaths worldwide, according to a report by the World Bank.
In Mumbai alone, 8011 complaints related to roads were filed, according to Praja's 2024 report on civic issues. Shockingly, it took an average of 54 days to resolve these complaints. The conditions of our roads are appalling, with bad potholes, endless construction, non-existent footpaths, and near-fatal to fatal accidents becoming a daily norm. As citizens, we have become accustomed to these hazardous conditions. With the monsoon season here, the situation is set to worsen.
We demand potholes be fixed within 10 to 12 days at most, in line with BMC Citizen Charter norms, instead of the current average of 54 days.
An article in the Times of India in October 2022 stated: “Heavy rain coupled with potholes, bad roads, and ongoing infrastructure work has spelt doom for motorists. Over 16,000 potholes were recorded in 2022. Between 2018 and 2022, there were 5,626 deaths and Rs 15 crore was spent on repairs. Yet, looking at the state of the roads, one must ask—is anyone listening?”
Along with saving countless lives, fixing Mumbai's roads will also:
- Reduce traffic congestion.
- Improve pedestrian safety.
- Minimize vehicle damage.
- Enhance the overall quality of life for Mumbai residents.
