Petition for Pell Grant Refunds to Borrowers Affected by Negligence

The Issue

Thousands of student borrowers—especially low-income students who relied on Pell Grants—have been financially harmed due to gross negligence by schools and loan servicers. Many of us had our Pell Grants misapplied, leading to unexpected debts, inflated loan balances, and out-of-pocket expenses that should have been covered. Instead of receiving the financial support promised by the federal government, we were left struggling with unnecessary debt. This has caused long-term financial hardship, delaying homeownership, business opportunities, and overall financial stability.

If this issue remains unaddressed, countless borrowers will continue to suffer the consequences of a system that failed them. The government is already refunding fraudulent loan payments—but why should Pell Grant recipients be treated differently? Without immediate action, affected borrowers will be unfairly left out of relief efforts, and the government will continue to withhold money that rightfully belongs to students. This is a matter of fairness, accountability, and economic justice.

The Department of Education has taken steps to address student loan fraud, but it has ignored a critical gap: borrowers whose Pell Grants were never properly applied. As relief efforts continue, now is the time to demand full financial justice. Every day that passes means more students struggling with debts they never should have had. We must act now to ensure Pell Grant recipients receive the refunds they deserve.

We demand that the Department of Education immediately refund all misapplied Pell Grants directly to borrowers, correct credit reports, and hold negligent institutions accountable!
