Subject: Installation of Solar-Powered Flashing Crosswalk Lights on Atlee Road

We, the undersigned residents and members of the Hanover County community, are requesting the installation of solar-powered, push-button activated flashing pedestrian lights at the existing crosswalks along Atlee Road in Mechanicsville (Rutland community area).

These crosswalks serve many families, students, and pedestrians daily. However, due to two lanes of traffic in the same direction, the current design poses a serious safety hazard — particularly when one driver stops for a pedestrian and another driver in the adjacent lane continues through, unable to see the stopped vehicle. This situation has led to tragic outcomes in other communities, and similar near-miss incidents have already been observed along Atlee Road.

We believe that the addition of solar-powered flashing lights would greatly improve driver awareness and pedestrian safety, helping to prevent injuries or fatalities.

A request for a VDOT traffic study has already been submitted (Reference No. 2234057). We respectfully ask that these safety improvements be prioritized and implemented as soon as possible.

Community safety should not wait for a tragedy. Together, we can take proactive steps to protect our neighbors, children, and families who use these crossings every day.

Sincerely,

Residents of Hanover County and the Rutland Community
