The Issue

We, the undersigned residents, parents, families, and community members, are asking the City of Omaha to conduct a comprehensive pedestrian and traffic safety evaluation of the school crossing at 180th Street and Harrison Street and take appropriate action to improve the safety of children and other pedestrians using this crossing.

This crossing is regularly used by students walking to and from Wheeler Elementary, Beadle Middle School, and Millard West High School.

The traffic conditions in this area have changed significantly. The expansion and development along 180th Street has brought substantially more traffic through the area, while continued residential and commercial growth west of 180th has also increased traffic in the surrounding community.

Although there is an existing marked crosswalk, we believe the current crossing deserves another evaluation based on today's traffic conditions and the number of students who use it.

We respectfully ask the City of Omaha to evaluate:

Vehicle traffic volumes during school arrival and dismissal times
Vehicle speeds in the area
The number of students and pedestrians using the crossing
Driver yielding behavior at the crosswalk
Visibility and sight distance for pedestrians and drivers
Existing lighting and signage
Whether additional traffic-control measures are warranted
We also ask the City to consider appropriate safety improvements based on its findings, including enhanced pedestrian and school-crossing signage, flashing pedestrian warning signs, an RRFB or other pedestrian-activated beacon, improved lighting, high-visibility crosswalk markings, traffic-calming measures, or any other improvements recommended by the City's traffic engineers.

Our goal is not to prescribe one particular solution. Our goal is to make sure that a crossing regularly used by children from three schools receives the level of safety consideration appropriate for the current traffic conditions.

We are asking the City to evaluate this location before a serious accident involving a student occurs.

By signing this petition, we are asking the City of Omaha to review the 180th Street & Harrison Street crossing and work with Millard Public Schools and the surrounding community to identify and implement reasonable measures to make this crossing safer.

Thank you for listening to the concerns of our community and, most importantly, for helping protect the children who use this crossing every school day.
