The Issue

We, the undersigned, are concerned residents and frequent users of the intersection between Wheeler Way and Emmons Drive Junction near  the A1 Bus and Limo depot crossing next to the Woodmont way apartment community. We urge the West Windsor Township and Mercer County Traffic Department to install a pedestrian light at this intersection to ensure the safety of pedestrians, especially children, the elderly, individuals with disabilities, and pets, as there is a challenge for vehicles not adhering to the '4-way' STOP signs in place.

The intersection at Emmons Drive and Cornerstone Lane has become increasingly hazardous for pedestrians. There have been numerous near-misses in recent years, particularly as more people walk or bike in the area. The current lack of a safe crossing option puts lives at risk daily. Pedestrians must navigate heavy traffic from buses, limos, and cars, with no clear signal for drivers to stop. Motorists often speed through the junction and rarely yield to pedestrians.

Studies show that pedestrian lights significantly improve driver compliance and pedestrian safety. Implementing this measure will:

Provide a clear, visible signal to drivers to stop for pedestrians.
Reduce the likelihood of accidents and injuries.
Encourage walking and biking by making the area safer for all users.
Residents have expressed concerns and shared stories of close calls and difficulties crossing the street. Children commuting to school, families visiting nearby facilities, and seniors accessing community services all face unnecessary risk without a proper pedestrian signal.

We respectfully request the West Windsor Township and Mercer County Traffic Department to:

Conduct a traffic safety assessment at Emmons Drive Junction near Cornerstone Lane and the A1 Bus and Limo depot.
Install a pedestrian light at this crossing to ensure safe passage for pedestrians.
Ensure the signal is well-maintained and regularly monitored for effectiveness.
By signing this petition, you are voicing your support for a safer community. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 7,522 pedestrian fatalities and 67,000 pedestrian injuries nationwide in 2022. By taking this simple proactive step, we can help prevent accidents and save lives in our community.

Please sign and share this petition to make the Emmons Drive Junction crossing a safer place for everyone.

This intersection is maintained by West Windsor Twp and only West Windsor Twp. Myself and Mark Mattaliano of Mercer County DOT, have no say as to what is decided for West Windsor Twps intersections. That would be decided by West Windsor Twp officials. Hope this helps. Thank you. Stephen Benner MCDOT
