Petition for New Renters Law in Woodbury

The Issue

To the Town Board of Woodbury,

We, the undersigned residents of Woodbury, urgently request the enactment of a new

renters law following a recent incident on November 23, 2024. A stabbing occurred in a

house rented illegally to multiple families, highlighting the need for stricter regulations.

Illegal multifamily occupancy results in increased taxes for residents, as these families

pay single-family taxes while utilizing more resources within the school district.

Additionally, criminals who cannot rent legally exploit third-party arrangements,

endangering our community, as evidenced by the recent stabbing incident.

We urge collaboration with the school district to protect our community's safety and

wellbeing.

Proposed Measures:

1. Mandatory Permits and Inspections: Require permits and full inspections

before renting to ensure compliance with single-family zoning.

2. Tenant Registration: Implement annual registration of tenants' names and

numbers, with school district verification.

3. Penalties for Non-Compliance: Impose a $20,000 fine for violations, as illegal

rentals strain local resources and increase taxes.

In conclusion, we believe that the proposed measures are essential to safeguarding the

integrity and safety of our community. By implementing mandatory permits and

inspections, tenant registration, and strict penalties for non-compliance, we can address

the challenges posed by illegal multifamily occupancy. These steps will not only protect

our residents from potential dangers but also ensure that everyone contributes fairly to

our shared resources. We call upon local leaders and authorities to take swift action in

enacting these necessary changes, reinforcing Woodbury as a safe and equitable place

for all its residents. Together, we can create a community where everyone feels secure

and valued.

Sincerely,
