Petition for Luna Road to become a one-way street
The Issue
As you know Luna Road is a relatively narrow residential road, with houses and parked vehicles on both sides.
There are limited drop kerbs, passing places and opportunities for vehicles travelling in opposite directions to safely pass one another.
Daily, we are witnessing cars narrowly avoiding collisions, drivers experiencing frustration at trying to pass other cars on our narrow street and sadly, more often than not, we are seeing vehicles with fresh dents, bumps or scrapes. It's deeply frustrating to watch our cars get damaged time and again.
Luna Road is not equipped to handle the heavy two-way traffic it currently endures. Designed as a residential street, its structure cannot accommodate the increased number of cars trying to use it
Where passing is possible, it is often only by manoeuvring between parked cars. This is increasingly problematic as modern vehicles continue to become larger and wider. As a result, vehicles attempting to pass each other are frequently forced into very tight spaces, increasing the likelihood of cars mounting the kerb, striking parked vehicles or causing damage to both moving and stationary vehicles.
Proposed solution:
A one-way system would:
- Reduce the likelihood of vehicles colliding with parked cars.
- Make it significantly easier and safer for vehicles to travel along Luna Road.
- Reduce congestion and the need for drivers to perform difficult manoeuvres between parked vehicles.
- Improve safety for pedestrians and other road users.
- Reduce damage and disruption caused by vehicles attempting to pass each other in restricted spaces.
- Provide a more appropriate traffic arrangement for a narrow residential road.
Alternative routes
We recognise that traffic currently travelling in both directions along Luna Road would need to use alternative routes. However, Manchester Road and Norfolk Road provide suitable neighbouring routes around the area and could accommodate traffic travelling in the opposite direction.
We believe that redirecting through-traffic via these adjacent roads would not place an unreasonable additional burden on them. Instead, it would remove unnecessary through-traffic from Luna Road and allow the road to function more safely as a residential street.
We would look to ask the council to consider:
1. The current width and layout of Luna Road.
2. The number and positioning of parked vehicles.
3. The limited number of safe passing points and drop kerbs.
4. Reports of vehicles being damaged while attempting to pass.
5. The increasing size and width of modern vehicles.
6. The potential impact on pedestrian and road-user safety.
7. The suitability of Manchester Road and Norfolk Road as alternative routes.
8. Whether a one-way system, potentially combined with appropriate signage and road markings, would improve overall safety and traffic flow.
We would not be asking for traffic to be removed from the area, but for it to be managed in a safer and more appropriate way. We would be asking the council to formally assess the situation and consult with local residents before making any decisions.
If you live on Luna Road or regularly use the road, we would really appreciate your support by adding your name and signature to our petition.
Every signature helps demonstrate that this is a shared concern by local residents
Thank you for your support
