As passionate fans of the NFL, we were deeply disappointed by the officiating in the AFC Championship game, which appeared to tilt the scales against the Buffalo Bills. This game, like many others, raised serious concerns about the transparency and accountability of NFL officiating.

Currently, the NFL Officiating Committee operates under direct oversight of the league itself, calling into question its objectivity. While officials supposedly undergo weekly evaluations, there is no meaningful public accountability or scrutiny. How formal are the evaluations? How complex is the grading? The lack of transparency and inefficiency of the current system undermines the integrity of the game especially in high-stakes matchups where officiating should be at its absolute best. Instead, fans are left questioning the fairness of outcomes.

We recognize that the NFL is a private organization, but fairness and integrity should be at the forefront of the sport. That is why we demand the implementation of a third-party, independent entity to oversee the NFL Officiating Committee. This move would, among others:

• Ensure greater transparency and accuracy in officiating decisions
• Provide external oversight to prevent conflicts of interest (personal relationships, etc)
• Restore trust in the game by guaranteeing fairness for all teams

This petition is not just about one game or one team - it’s about ensuring every team and fanbase gets a fair game. Officiating should never overshadow talent, hard work, and competition. The NFL must take action to minimize referees directly impacting the outcome unnecessarily or incorrectly, level the playing field, and restore faith in the integrity of the sport.
