Petition for Improve academic accessibility for neurodivergent students at SJSU
The Issue
As a student at the San José State University (SJSU) and as someone who has seen firsthand the challenges faced by neurodivergent students, I am deeply committed to promoting a more inclusive and supportive academic environment. Neurodivergent students, who may have conditions such as autism, ADHD, and dyslexia, often encounter significant barriers in traditional learning settings that do not accommodate their unique ways of processing and communicating information.
These students, like all others, deserve an education system that recognizes and nurtures their potential. However, without adequate support structures in place, many face undue stress and unnecessary hurdles that can hinder their academic success and overall well-being. Statistics reveal that neurodivergent students are at a higher risk of dropping out or underperforming due to the lack of appropriate accommodations and funding.
A comprehensive approach to improving accessibility at SJSU is necessary. Firstly, we need more trained staff who understand neurodiversity and can provide adequate support and resources tailored to individual needs. Implementing mandatory training for faculty and staff on neurodiversity will create a more knowledgeable and empathetic school environment.
Moreover, enhancing existing services such as counseling and advising to include specific programs for neurodivergent individuals will ensure that these students receive guidance and support that respects their unique challenges and strengths. Infrastructure improvements, such as quiet study spaces and sensory-friendly classrooms, can significantly enhance the learning experiences for those who are easily overwhelmed by sensory input.
We also propose establishing a dedicated program to continually assess and improve the university's policies regarding neurodivergent students. This group should be composed of neurodivergent individuals, educators, and mental health professionals who can provide diverse perspectives on what changes are most critical.
By signing this petition, you will help advocate for a campus that reflects the real diversity of its students and enable all individuals, regardless of their neurocognitive profiles, to thrive. Together, let's make SJSU a beacon of inclusivity and academic excellence for neurodivergent students everywhere.
