The Issue

Petition for Immediate Traffic Safety Measures on Purdy Hill Road and Other Monroe Roads!

We, the undersigned residents and community members, are requesting immediate action from the Town regarding the dangerous and worsening traffic conditions on Purdy Hill Road. Note: There are many others

Purdy Hill Road has become increasingly unsafe due to excessive speeding, commuter cut-through traffic, and reckless driving behavior throughout the day — especially during morning and evening commute hours. The current speed radar signs have not meaningfully slowed traffic, and residents continue to witness vehicles traveling at dangerous speeds through a residential neighborhood.

This road is heavily used by:

  • Children riding bikes and scooters
  • Families walking with strollers
  • Joggers and runners
  • Dog walkers
  • Residents exercising and enjoying the neighborhood
  • Homeowners attempting to safely enter and exit their driveways

Many residents now feel unsafe simply backing out of their driveways due to the speed of passing vehicles. There is growing concern that, without stronger intervention, a serious accident involving a child, pedestrian, cyclist, or resident is inevitable.

As taxpayers and members of this community, we are asking the Town to prioritize the safety of the people who live here over commuter convenience.

While this petition focuses on Purdy Hill Road, residents have reported similar speeding and safety concerns on other Monroe roads including Moose Hill Road, Cutlers Farm Road, Cross Hill Road, Hammertown Road, Barn Hill Road, and others. This demonstrates that the issue is not isolated to one neighborhood but reflects a broader community-wide road safety concern that deserves immediate attention.

We respectfully request the Town take the following actions immediately:

  • Install speed humps/speed tables on Purdy Hill Road.
  • Increase police enforcement during peak commute hours, including monitoring from both directions of traffic.
  • Conduct regular speed enforcement operations day and night until speeding behavior improves.
  • Evaluate restrictions on through-truck traffic along this residential roadway.

This is a residential neighborhood where families live, children play, and residents should feel safe walking, biking, exercising, and entering or exiting their homes. We urge the Town to act now before a preventable tragedy occurs.

By signing below, we support immediate action to improve safety on Purdy Hill Road and address the other roads of serious concerns.
