Petition for Immediate Student Safety Improvements at Canyon View Middle School
Protect Our Children Before a Tragedy Happens
We, the undersigned parents, students, staff, and community members, respectfully request that the Iron County School District, Canyon View Middle School, Canyon View High School, and Cedar City work together to immediately improve pedestrian safety around the schools.
On the first day of school, a student was struck by a vehicle while using a crosswalk. Fortunately, the student was able to get up and walk away, but this incident highlights a serious safety concern that requires immediate action. During morning drop-off, many drivers are distracted or in a hurry, creating dangerous conditions for children who are simply trying to get to school safely.
Every child deserves to arrive at school without fearing they will be hit by a vehicle.
We respectfully request the following:
Assign a trained crossing guard at the busiest crosswalks during morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal.
Increase Cedar City Police presence during school arrival and dismissal times until traffic patterns improve.
Conduct a formal traffic safety assessment of the Canyon View Middle School and Canyon View High School campus and surrounding roadways.
Install additional warning signs, flashing pedestrian beacons, or other traffic-calming measures where appropriate.
Review the current traffic flow and drop-off procedures to reduce congestion and improve driver awareness.
Educate students and drivers on school-zone safety at the beginning of each school year.
Why We Support This Petition
School zones should be among the safest places in our community. Children should not have to risk their lives crossing a parking lot or street to attend school. Preventative action now can help avoid serious injuries—or worse—in the future.
We urge school officials, city leaders, and law enforcement to work together to make meaningful improvements before another incident occurs.
Please join us in asking for immediate action to protect the students of Canyon View Middle School and Canyon View High School.
