Petition for Immediate Safety Improv. at the intersection of Old Nyack Tnpk/Hungry Hollow
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents, parents, motorists, and community members, respectfully call upon Rockland County, the Town of Ramapo, the Villages of Spring valley & Chestnut Ridge to take immediate action to improve safety at the intersection of Old Nyack Turnpike & Hungry Hollow Road.
Anyone who regularly uses this intersection knows the daily challenge. Vehicles attempting to exit Hungry Hollow Road onto Old Nyack Turnpike—or navigate the intersection in either direction—often face significant delays because there is no coordinated traffic control system. Drivers are forced to wait for unpredictable gaps in traffic, creating backups, confusion, and unnecessary risk as everyone competes for the right of way.
Even more important, however, is the safety of the many children, families, pedestrians, and cyclists who use this area every day. This intersection serves a growing residential community, yet people are expected to cross a busy roadway without the protection of a stop-controlled intersection. Parents should not have to worry every time their children walk or ride through this crossing, and residents should be able to travel through their own neighborhood with confidence rather than concern.
Every day that passes without improvements is another day that this known safety issue remains unresolved. We believe our community deserves better, and that proactive action today can prevent serious incidents tomorrow.
We respectfully request the following improvements:
- Installation of a three-way stop at the intersection of Old Nyack Turnpike & Hungry Hollow Road to create a clear, orderly, and predictable flow of traffic.
- Relocation of the existing nearby crosswalk so that it is positioned directly at the intersection, where pedestrians naturally cross and where every vehicle is required to stop.
- Immediate coordination between Rockland County, the Town of Ramapo, the Villages of Spring valley & Chestnut Ridge to prioritize and implement these critical safety improvements without delay.
While Rockland County is the primary agency responsible for approving and installing traffic control devices, the Town of Ramapo and the Villages of Spring valley & Chestnut Ridge also play an important role in advocating for their residents and working collaboratively to ensure these long-overdue improvements become a reality.
A three-way stop would do more than regulate traffic—it would create an organized system where drivers take turns instead of fighting for openings, reduce backups and confusion, and provide pedestrians with a significantly safer place to cross. It is a practical, common-sense solution that benefits motorists and pedestrians alike.
This petition is about one simple principle: every resident, every driver, and every child deserves to travel through this intersection safely. By taking action now, our local leaders have the opportunity to improve traffic flow, reduce unnecessary risks, and make a lasting investment in the safety and well-being of our community.
We respectfully urge Rockland County, together with the Town of Ramapo and the Villages of Spring valley & Chestnut Ridge, to work collaboratively and prioritize these improvements as soon as possible. The time to act is now, while we have the opportunity to make this intersection safer for everyone.
