Petition for Fairness, Understanding, and Equal Opportunity for Every Student

To the School Administration, School Committee, Educators, Staff, and Community,

We are asking for meaningful, lasting change so that every student has the opportunity to be heard, understood, supported, and treated fairly.

This petition comes from one mother and one student who spent months advocating, asking questions, attending meetings, making phone calls, sending emails, gathering documentation, seeking support, and refusing to give up when it felt like no one was listening.

That student is my daughter, Kyleigh.

For the first time, a change was finally made for her.

And while I am grateful that someone finally listened and that a change was made, I cannot help but ask:

Why did it have to take all of this?

Why did it take months of fighting before a change happened?

Why did it take countless meetings, emails, phone calls, documentation, advocacy, frustration, tears, and hours physically sitting in the school?

Why did my daughter have to go through what she went through before something changed?

And most importantly:

What happens to the students whose parents cannot fight this hard?

What happens to the child whose parent doesn’t know who to call?

What happens to the student whose family doesn’t understand the system or know how to advocate?

What happens to the child whose parent cannot spend hours in meetings, sending emails, making phone calls, documenting everything, and searching for someone who will finally listen?

What happens to the student who eventually stops asking for help because they believe nobody will listen anyway?

Those are the students we are advocating for now.

Kyleigh’s experience should not simply result in a change that benefits Kyleigh.

It should be an opportunity to learn.

It should be an opportunity to improve policies, communication, education, understanding, and support so that another student does not have to experience the same struggle before someone recognizes that change is necessary.

We are asking for change.

We are asking that the lessons learned from Kyleigh’s experience be used to create stronger and more consistent support for students who may be struggling with anxiety, mental health challenges, difficult circumstances, or other barriers that can affect their education and opportunities.

We are asking for:

Better education and training for staff regarding student mental health and individual needs.
Clearer communication between students, families, educators, administrators, and support staff.
Consistent policies that provide students with fair and equal opportunities.
A process for students and families to raise concerns and receive meaningful responses.
Greater understanding and consideration for students who are struggling while still doing their best to succeed.
A commitment to addressing concerns before they become overwhelming or damaging to a student’s education.
Accountability when a student’s needs are not being appropriately understood or supported.
A system that does not require parents to become professional advocates simply to ensure their child receives a fair opportunity.

A lack of education or understanding should never become the reason a child loses an opportunity.

If staff need additional education, then education is where the change should begin.

If communication is lacking, then communication needs to improve.

If policies create barriers for students, then those policies need to be examined and changed.

No child should have to suffer simply because the adults responsible for supporting them do not fully understand what they are experiencing.

Kyleigh’s story matters.

Kyleigh worked incredibly hard to get where she is today.

There were moments when this fight became so exhausting that she almost gave up.

She almost threw in the towel.

But she didn’t.

And neither did I.

I continued fighting because I knew my daughter deserved to be heard. She deserved an opportunity. She deserved fairness. She deserved to have people believe in her.

And eventually, a change was made.

But I don’t want Kyleigh’s story to simply end with “a change was made for Kyleigh.”

I want her story to be remembered as the moment we realized that the next child shouldn’t have to fight the same battle.

Her experience should become a lesson.

Her experience should become an opportunity for improvement.

Her experience should help create a better path for the students who come after her.

This petition is bigger than one student.

Kyleigh and I are not advocating only for Kyleigh anymore.

We are advocating for the student who may walk through those doors next year.

We are advocating for the child who is struggling but still trying.

We are advocating for the student who feels misunderstood.

We are advocating for the child whose parent doesn’t know how to fight the system.

We are advocating for the student who doesn’t have someone sitting beside them saying:

“This isn’t right. We are not giving up.”

Every child deserves someone who will listen.

Every child deserves a fair chance.

Every child deserves to be treated with dignity and understanding.

Every child deserves equal opportunity.

And every child deserves to know that asking for help should not become another battle they have to fight.

Our request

By signing this petition, we are asking school leadership and the community to recognize that the changes made through Kyleigh’s experience should be used to create meaningful, lasting improvements for all students.

We ask that Kyleigh’s experience not be forgotten once her individual situation has been resolved.

Instead, let it be remembered.

Let it be the beginning.

Let it become a reason to review what can be done better.

Let it become a reason to educate.

Let it become a reason to listen sooner.

Let it become a reason for another parent to never have to sit in a school for hours begging for someone to understand their child.

Kyleigh’s story started this fight.

But it does not have to end with Kyleigh.

We can take what happened and turn it into something positive.

We can make sure the next student doesn’t have to fight as hard.

We can make sure the next parent doesn’t have to spend months trying to get someone to listen.

We can make sure the next child isn’t doubted before they are understood.

We can do better.

And we are asking you to stand with us.

Not just for Kyleigh.

For every student who comes after her.

For fairness.

For understanding.

For equal opportunity.

For change.

And for the children who deserve to know that their voices matter.

Kyleigh’s story should be remembered—not because of everything she had to fight through, but because of the change that can come from it.
