Petition for Fairness, Transparency, and Positive Competition in Oriskany Little League

Petition for Fairness, Transparency, and Positive Competition in Oriskany Little League
The Issue
Promoting Fairness, Safety, and Communication for All Players
To: The Oriskany Little League Board and Leadership
We, the undersigned parents, guardians, and supporters of the players in Oriskany Little League, respectfully submit this petition to advocate for essential improvements in the areas of player safety, communication, team formation, and transparency. Our mission is to ensure a safe, fair, and fun environment for all children who participate in this beloved community program.
⚾ Our Key Concerns:
1. Unbalanced and Uneven Teams
The current draft process has resulted in unevenly stacked teams, discouraging healthy competition and creating frustrating experiences for players and families. We believe in friendly, fair competition that allows all kids to enjoy the game and grow their skills.
2. Lack of Communication and Accessibility
Tryout information is currently only posted on Facebook, with no direct communication (email or phone) to registered families. This leads to confusion and missed opportunities to participate.
3. Limited Tryout Availability
Only one tryout date is provided, with no makeup opportunities. Families with legitimate scheduling conflicts are penalized, and players may be excluded from proper evaluation.
4. Inflexibility After the Draft
Once the draft is finalized, no adjustments are permitted—even in the case of clear clerical errors (such as incorrect birthdates), or when players would be better suited developmentally in a different division (e.g., from Majors back to Minors).
5. Player Safety Concerns
Some current training and practice activities have raised concerns for being overly intense or unsafe for young athletes. We expect a focus on safe and age-appropriate training that helps children grow in confidence and ability—not risk injury. For example, unsafe playing conditions.
6. Lack of Voice or Proposal Process for Parents
Concerns and suggestions from families are often dismissed without opportunity for open dialogue. We believe that parent and community input is essential to a thriving, successful league.
7. No Yearly Redraft, Leading to Stagnation
Without a fresh draft each year, certain teams remain disproportionately strong, while others struggle to remain competitive. This structure is unfair to both players and coaches, and limits development opportunities.
8. Lack of Transparency from the Local Little League Board
The current operations of the local Little League board lack transparency and accessibility. Meeting dates are not publicly advertised, and minutes are not readily available for families who want to stay informed. Additionally, there is no clear communication about when board elections occur or how community members can get involved or run for positions. A more open and inclusive approach is essential to building trust, ensuring accountability, and giving all families a fair opportunity to contribute to the direction and success of the league.
✅ What We Are Requesting:
1. A Transparent and Equitable Yearly Draft
Implement a full redraft each season to promote balanced, competitive play.
Use objective scoring from tryouts to build evenly matched teams.
Include league oversight to ensure fairness and transparency.
2. Safe, Age-Appropriate Training Standards
Review and revise current training activities to ensure safety.
Provide coaching guidance that emphasizes proper form, safety, and fun.
3. Clear and Inclusive Communication
Email, text, or call all registered families with tryout and league info.
Use multiple communication channels, not just Facebook.
4. Flexible Tryout Scheduling
Offer at least one additional makeup date for tryouts.
Ensure all players get a fair chance to be evaluated.
5. Post-Draft Adjustment Window
Allow a limited window post-draft to correct errors or reassign players based on development needs or special circumstances.
6. A Formal Parent Proposal Process
Create a clear method for parents to submit ideas, feedback, or concerns.
Allow for respectful discussion and responses from league leadership.
🙌 Our Goal:
We believe Oriskany Little League can be a shining example of what youth sports should be: safe, fair, and fun. Let’s work together to create a positive atmosphere where every child has the chance to develop their skills, grow in confidence, and fall in love with the game.
We kindly ask the Oriskany Little League Board to acknowledge these concerns and implement the proposed changes to improve the experience for all involved.
Signed,
Your Oriskany Little League Parents
