The Issue

We, the undersigned residents and community members of Parsons, Kansas, hereby petition the Parsons City Commission and Utility Department Administration to reform local municipal utility policies, improve customer service, and guarantee clean, drinkable tap water for every household. Unlike other essential utility providers in our region that offer payment plans and extensions, our local utility enforces rigid shutoffs with zero flexibility, followed by steep reconnect fees that double for repeat occurrences. Compounded by stacked monthly fees for water, sewer, storm water, EPA compliance, and trash, these immediate disconnections place an undue burden on working families, elderly residents, and individuals on fixed income schedules. Furthermore, community members are frequently subjected to brown, discolored, or foul-smelling tap water, alongside dismissive or unprofessional treatment from staff when calling for support. We demand that city leaders establish flexible payment arrangements and grace periods, cap excessive reconnect fees, require customer service accountability training, and take immediate, transparent action to upgrade infrastructure and resolve water quality issues across our city.
