The Issue
As a concerned parent in the City of Lawndale, I have noticed an increasing issue that is affecting our community, particularly around the local schools. Code Enforcement officers have been stationed outside our schools during drop-off and pick-up times. This has led to heightened stress and tension amongst parents, including myself, as aggressive ticketing practices by the officers have resulted in conflicts and confusion.
The presence of Code Enforcement officers at critical times has created an environment of fear and frustration, rather than safety and cooperation. While we understand the importance of maintaining order and safety, the way Code Enforcement practices are currently being executed is counterproductive to these goals. Many parents are receiving fines and tickets for minor infractions, which often seem unnecessary and excessive.
We propose several actionable solutions to address this issue effectively and constructively:
1. **Review and Amend Current Policies**: We request the Lawndale City Council to conduct a thorough review of the current enforcement policies regarding schools. The policies should focus on safety rather than revenue generation.
2. **Increased Communication and Transparency**: Implement open channels of communication between Code Enforcement officers, schools, and parents to ensure clarity, understanding, and cooperation between all stakeholders.
3. **Officer Training**: Introduce additional training for Code Enforcement officers to handle situations with empathy, respect, and clear communication, aiming to reduce conflicts and ensure understanding.
4. **Re-evaluation of Penalties and Fines**: Consider lowering fines for minor infractions and seek to educate rather than penalize parents and community members.
5. **Community Engagement**: Create forums and regular meetings where community concerns can be discussed and addressed. It will foster mutual trust and ensure that policies reflect the community's needs.
The goal of this petition is to foster a positive and safe environment for both residents and our children who attend school in Lawndale. It's crucial that Code Enforcement practices are not only lawful but also fair, reasonable, and intended to enhance the well-being of our community.
Please join us in urging the Lawndale City Council, City Manager, and Code Enforcement Department to implement fair and responsible reassessment of their practices around our schools. By signing this petition, you will help bring about necessary change that ensures a balanced and harmonious community atmosphere.
Thank you for your support and dedication to making our community a better place for everyone.
