Petition for Equal Parental Involvement for children with disabilities
The Issue
I am a parent living the daily challenges of raising three children with disabilities on my own. Every decision, every doctor's appointment, every single need falls squarely on my shoulders. It's an overwhelming responsibility that one parent should not have to bear alone. But I am not alone in this struggle; many families across the nation are facing similar situations. The absence of one parent not only places an undue burden on the other but also impacts the overall well-being and development of the child.
When both parents are involved in the upbringing of a disabled child, it greatly supports their therapy, learning, and overall development. Both parents’ involvement enriches the child’s life, providing emotional, psychological, and practical support that one parent alone cannot entirely offer. Yet, too often, one parent is left to handle this enormous task without the active participation of the other.
This is why I am petitioning for a law that requires both parents to be involved in the care and upbringing of their disabled children. Such a law would ensure that all children receive the comprehensive care they deserve, while also sharing the responsibilities more equally between both parents.
Research and reports continuously highlight the benefits of dual parental involvement in improving outcomes for children with disabilities. According to studies by both the Centers for Disease Control and the American Academy of Pediatrics, children whose parents are both actively involved in their care generally exhibit better developmental progress and overall health. Furthermore, parental involvement is critical in educational settings, as emphasized by countless educational and psychological researchers.
This change is feasible. A legislative framework can support and encourage shared parenting responsibilities, scheduled parental activities, and coordinated care plans to ensure that both parents maintain active roles in their children's lives. It is a fair and necessary step towards better health outcomes for disabled children and a balanced, supportive family environment.
Please join me in advocating for this change that can significantly improve the lives of so many families. Sign this petition to urge lawmakers to create and pass a law that mandates both parents to be involved actively in the care of their disabled children. Your support can make a profound difference in ensuring these children receive the care they need and deserve.
