The Issue

Dear Mayor "FoFo" Gilich,

We, the undersigned, are writing to request that you exercise your veto power, as granted by Mississippi Code § 21-8-17, to block the proposed rezoning of property along Big John Road from Agricultural (A) to Medium-Density Single-Family Residential (RS-7.5) or any other residential zone besides Residential Estate (RE). The rezoning, if allowed to move forward, will have significant and long-lasting impacts on the character of the area, disrupting its rural nature and putting additional strain on infrastructure, schools, and local resources.

The proposed development threatens the integrity of the neighborhood, which has been home to families for generations. The increased traffic, potential environmental impacts, and changes to the area's character will affect both the current residents and future generations. A veto would protect this unique neighborhood and hold the City Council accountable for considering the concerns of the community.

We ask you to use your authority to send a clear message that the voices of Biloxi’s residents and close neighbors matter, and that decisions should prioritize the welfare of our existing residents and the neighborhoods they live in. Furthermore, we ask that you support the enforcement of the "change or mistake" rule that has long governed zoning changes throughout the State of Mississippi, even if City Council fails to follow it.

Please veto this rezoning and preserve the character of the Big John Road area for years to come.

Sincerely,
Concerned Citizens of Biloxi & Harrison County
