PETITION FOR ACCOUNTABILITY FOR LOCKED EMERGENCY EXITS AT SEATTLE YOUTH TRACK MEETS
The Issue
We, the undersigned parents, guardians, athletes, coaches, volunteers, officials, and community members, submit this petition to demand accountability for serious safety failures that allegedly occurred during youth track and field events at West Seattle Stadium during the 2026 season.
For weeks, participants, families, volunteers, and staff attended events where emergency exits, access gates, and evacuation routes were reportedly locked, blocked, or otherwise restricted during active stadium operations. These conditions raised significant concerns regarding emergency response access, evacuation procedures, ADA accessibility, and overall public safety.
Multiple concerns were raised by community members throughout the season. Despite repeated warnings and documented complaints, corrective action was not consistently implemented, leaving participants and spectators exposed to unacceptable risks.
The issue extends beyond individual incidents. It raises serious questions about leadership oversight, operational decision-making, safety compliance, and accountability within Seattle Parks and Recreation.
We are calling for an independent investigation into these safety failures and for appropriate accountability at all levels of leadership. Families who entrust public agencies with the safety of their children deserve transparency, responsibility, and confidence that public safety standards are being upheld.
