The Issue

To: Wayne County Public Schools Board of Education, Superintendent Marc Whichard, and Eastern Wayne High School Administration

We, the undersigned parents, students, alumni, educators, and concerned community members, are calling for the immediate removal of Debbie Curl from her teaching position at Eastern Wayne High School pending a full and transparent investigation into allegations that racial slurs were directed toward students in the classroom.

According to publicly shared student accounts and community concerns, Debbie Curl allegedly used racist language including the N-word and other racial slurs toward or in reference to students. Community members have stated that complaints were made to school leadership and district administration, yet many feel there has been no meaningful accountability or protection for students affected by these incidents.

Our schools should be environments where every student feels respected, protected, and valued regardless of race or background. Allegations involving racial slurs in the classroom deeply damage trust between students, families, educators, and the school system.

We are demanding the following:

• Immediate removal of Debbie Curl from classroom instruction while this matter is fully investigated
• A transparent public statement from Wayne County Public Schools regarding the handling of these allegations
• Independent review of complaints and student testimony related to this matter
• Stronger anti-racism and cultural sensitivity policies and training throughout the district
• Clear protections for students who report discriminatory behavior

This petition is not rooted in hate or harassment. It is rooted in accountability, student safety, and the belief that every child deserves an educational environment free from racism and discrimination.

Goldsboro and Wayne County have a rich history, culture, and legacy. Our children deserve educational leadership that reflects dignity, fairness, and respect for all students.

We stand with the students and families demanding accountability and change.

Sincerely,
The Concerned Community of Goldsboro and Wayne County
