PETITION FOR A REVIEW OF GHANA’S CURRENT E-VISA FEES
The Issue
We Call for a Review of Ghana’s E-Visa Fees
Ghana has positioned itself as a leading destination for cultural, heritage, business, and leisure tourism in Africa. Our history, culture, hospitality, and the significance of Ghana as a gateway for the African diaspora make the country uniquely placed to attract visitors from around the world.
However, Ghana’s current e-visa fee of approximately US$260 is a significant concern for the tourism industry and international travelers.
We respectfully call on the Government of Ghana to review the current e-visa pricing structure and consider a more competitive, affordable, and tourism-friendly fee.
Why This Matters
International travelers increasingly compare destinations based on the total cost and ease of travel. Visa fees form part of that decision.
For comparison, reported visa or entry-visa costs in a number of African and Caribbean destinations include:
Ghana (West Africa) - $260
Kenya (East Africa) - $30
Tanzania (East Africa) - $50
Rwanda (East Africa) - $50
Benin (West Africa) - $50
Nigeria (West Africa) - ~$50–$100 (Depends on visa category)
Ethiopia (East Africa) - $52
Zambia (Southern Africa) - $25–$50 (Depending on entry type)
Zimbabwe (Southern Africa) - $30
Côte d'Ivoire (West Africa) - $73
Dominican Republic (Caribbean) - $10
Jamaica (Caribbean) - No visa fee for many nationalities
Barbados (Caribbean) - Visa-free for many countries
Trinidad & Tobago (Caribbean) - Visa-free for many countries
Cape Verde (West Africa) - $33
Cuba (Caribbean) - $25
Senegal (West Africa) - $54
Gambia (West Africa) - Free to $100 (depends on nationality)
Togo (West Africa) - $42 to $70 (depends on type of visa)
Visa requirements and fees vary according to nationality, visa category, duration of stay, and entry arrangements. Nevertheless, these comparisons highlight the concern that Ghana’s visa cost can represent a substantial additional expense for prospective visitors.
The Tourism Industry Needs a Competitive Visa Policy
Ghana’s tourism businesses—tour operators, travel agencies, hotels, restaurants, transport providers, guides, attractions, artisans, event organizers, and communities—depend on the continued growth of international arrivals.
A more competitive visa fee could help reduce the financial barrier to visiting Ghana and make the country more competitive with alternative destinations.
Increased visitor numbers can contribute to:
- Greater tourism expenditure and foreign exchange earnings
- More business opportunities for tourism SMEs
- Increased employment across the tourism value chain
- Greater demand for hotels, restaurants, transportation and attractions
- Increased opportunities for local communities
- Stronger cultural and diaspora connections
- Increased competitiveness of Ghana as a regional tourism destination
Our Requests
We respectfully call on the Government of Ghana to:
- Review the current e-visa fee of approximately US$260.
- Engage the tourism industry and other relevant stakeholders in reviewing the fee structure.
- Consider introducing a more competitive and tourism-friendly e-visa fee.
- Explore differentiated visa pricing where appropriate, taking into account nationality, visa category, duration of stay, and bilateral arrangements.
- Consider measures that make Ghana easier and more affordable to access while maintaining appropriate immigration, security, and administrative requirements.
Make Ghana More Accessible
Ghana has an extraordinary tourism proposition. From our castles and forts to our festivals, wildlife, beaches, cuisine, music, arts, heritage sites and vibrant cities, the country has much to offer international visitors.
We should ensure that the cost and process of obtaining permission to enter Ghana do not unnecessarily discourage people from experiencing what our country has to offer.
We therefore call on the Government of Ghana to listen to the tourism industry, review the current e-visa pricing, and work toward a more competitive and accessible visa regime.
Our Appeal
We invite tourism professionals, businesses, travelers, diaspora communities, development partners, civil society organizations, and all individuals who believe in the growth of Ghana’s tourism sector to support this petition.

Make Ghana accessible. Make Ghana competitive. Let tourism grow.
