Petition for a Referendum on Bermuda’s Proposed Full Membership in CARICOM

The Issue

We, the registered voters of Bermuda, call upon the Government of Bermuda to hold a clear yes-or-no referendum as soon as possible on whether Bermuda should apply to become a full member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

This is a matter of major national importance. Full membership in CARICOM will have long-term implications for Bermuda’s economy, constitutional position, international relationships, immigration and labour framework, public finances, and the future direction of our country.

Many Bermudians have valid questions and concerns about the proposal. These concerns should not be dismissed, minimised, or treated as opposition for opposition’s sake. They deserve to be taken seriously, answered clearly, and placed before the people in a democratic vote.

We therefore respectfully demand that the Government of Bermuda hold a referendum asking Bermudian voters whether Bermuda should proceed with an application for full membership in CARICOM. Before making a decision, please read The Story of Us, the Green Paper released by the Government of Bermuda outlining what full CARICOM membership would entail. Please consider the implications thoroughly, including the impact this decision may have on Bermudian citizens.

Petition Demand:
I am a registered voter in Bermuda, and I demand that the Government hold a yes-or-no referendum as soon as possible on the issue of whether Bermuda should apply to become a full member of CARICOM.
