Petition for a Moratorium on Data Center Development in Defiance, OH
The Issue
Data centers are cropping up in vulnerable communities all over America. Residents near these massive buildings complain of constant noise, health-damaging pollution, soaring utility rates, and broken promises.
This data center explosion is not to meet the demand for basic computing. Instead, developers are racing to build massive campuses for AI speculation and to help Big Business profit from the stored data of everyday citizens.
While no formal site plans are currently available for Defiance, it is no secret that we are a target. The Planning Commission is already recommending zoning changes for data centers- City Council will vote on this July 28th at 5pm.
A moratorium NOW is the best way to protect Defiance from being sued by Big Tech and forced into a data center later. It offers no firm yes or no. Instead, this proposed pause will give time to conduct impact studies. This smart approach has already been adopted by Archbold, Maumee, Tiffin, Waterville, and more.
This petition is NOT an ordinance; it seeks to showcase support for a reasonable moratorium on data center development pursuant to all relevant legal parameters. There is no guaranteed time period, but we are recommending a minimum of a 6 month moratorium.
Join us in calling for a data center moratorium in Defiance by signing this petition AND contacting your elected officials. Together, we can advocate for economic development that prioritizes people over profit.
*All respondents should consider submitting direct comments to City Council >>fill out this form<< and attending City Council meetings at 7pm on the 1st, 2nd, and 4th Tuesdays of the month (631 Perry St) .
